What is a Voyager cheque or credit card?

South African Airways and Nedbank launched a new card that is the first of it’s kind in the world – the SAA Voyager cheque card. Unlike the SAA Voyager credit card, there is no qualifying income requirement to apply for this card. That means that everyone can now join this travel rewards program by simply having an account at Nedbank. WINNING!

This is a great product for you If you too are always looking for ways to stretch your money when it comes to travel expenses. The SAA Voyager cards earn you Voyager Miles when you use them for everyday payments. Once you have Voyager Miles you can spend them on any of the airline & lifestyle partners.

To give you a clearer idea of how these cards work, continue reading to learn more about  how we used the SAA Voyager cheque & credit cards while exploring Cape Town

SAA Voyager airport benefits

Our #VoyagerJourneys trip to Cape Town began at OR Tambo International airport. We got to check in on the red carpet instead of waiting in line because we have SAA Voyager cards. Then we got to relax in the SAA owned departure lounge. It’s beautifully decorated, very comfortable and a buffet meal was served. I remember thinking to myself: this is the life! In summary, the airport benefits of having an SAA Voyager card are:

  • Premium check-in
  • SAA lounge access
  • Priority boarding

After skipping the queues and relaxing in the lounge, a new standard was set for our travels. It really makes a difference when you have a smooth and easy experience at the airport.  We felt like VIPs! To make it better, you get all of the airport benefits regardless of class of travel.

How to use the SAA Voyager Cards on everyday spend to earn Voyager Miles

While in Cape Town, we used our SAA Voyager cards to pay for all of our expenses from our Uber rides, to our restaurant meals and activities. You earn 1 Voyager Mile for every R6 of eligible spendThis meant that as we explored Cape Town, we collected Voyager Miles which would enable us to travel even more.

We engulfed ourselves in Cape Malay culture at Bo-Kaap. We took in the breathtaking view of Table Mountain while on a sunset cruise at V&A Waterfront. And of course, we ate out at a variety of fantastic restaurants and markets. It was a great feeling knowing that we basically scored Voyager Miles for enjoying our time in Cape Town.

You don’t only need to spend on travel related items to earn Voyager Miles. That’s what’s so great about the SAA Voyager cheque and credit cards. You could be earning Voyager Miles by using your SAA Voyager cheque or credit card to pay for day to day purchases.

How to earn/spend Voyager Miles on car rental

On day three in Cape Town, we hired a car from Avis and went on a road trip to some must visit spots – Muizenberg Beach, Boulders Beach, Chapman’s Peak and Camps Bay. Avis is one of the car rental partners which means you don’t only earn miles for car rental but can also spend your Voyager Miles on car rental with them.

After admiring the colourful huts at Muizenberg Beach, our next stop was Boulders Beach which is close to Simon’s Town. We couldn’t come to Cape Town without stopping at this beach to visit the African penguins. Remember to bring your Voyager card with you to pay the entry fee. We climbed over and in between boulders to find some of the best spots at Boulders Beach. The penguins are so cute!

We said goodbye to the penguins and crossed the road to have lunch at a lovely restaurant called Boulders Beach Restaurant. A giant inflated penguin stands tall at the entrance so you can’t miss it.

Camps Bay is one of the best places to watch the sunset in Cape Town and was our final stop on our road trip. There is a wide selection of restaurants and shops along the promenade so you can enjoy a cocktail a meal or an ice cream as you watch the sun set over the ocean..
