Why go to Magaliesburg
If you are looking for a destination for a peaceful weekend away that is close to Joburg then Magaliesburg is a good option. I recently spent a winter weekend in Magaliesburg for a break from the business of life and came back feeling refreshed and restored. Because I went in winter, the landscape was dry and golden brown. It was very quiet. There are a lot of farms and a small town area with a Spar grocery shop.
How to get to Magaliesburg
Getting to Magaliesburg was an easy drive. It is a small town in Gauteng just one hour drive from Joburg. I departed from Fourways and the roads are good with no toll gates.
Where to stay in Magaliesburg
When deciding where to stay, I was initially looking for one of the many hotel and spas however, I didn’t want to spend so much on accomodation when I was literally around the corner from Joburg.
I love using Airbnb to find accommodation for all of my travels. So in true Gophari style, I found a cozy log cabin for two at Woodland Gardens using Airbnb. This cabin is literally located in the woods!
There are a number of cabins on the property and amenities include a swimming pool, a viewing deck and hectares of land for walks.
What to do in Magaliesburg
The point of my weekend away in Magaliesburg was relaxation so I made it a spa weekend. Other things to do include horse riding, visiting the Cradle of Humankind, hot air ballooning, hiking and the list goes on.
For my spa treatments, I went to Valley Lodge & Spa which is a 4 star hotel just 5min from Magaliesburg town. It’s absolute luxury. They have a winter spa package for R1500 per person till 31 July 2018 – check it out. The package includes a full body hot stone massage, a facial and a pedicure. I swopped out the pedicure for a head massage and hydrotherapy.
I had never had a full spa day before and I loved every minute. I enjoyed it so much that now I feel I need a spa day at least once a month! What made Valley Lodge & Spa even better is that they offer free access to the spa facilities with every treatment. Their spa facilities include a sauna, jacuzzi and a heated indoor pool. Because it’s winter it wasn’t busy and I got to spend about an hour in the jacuzzi undisturbed. I then spent half an hour in the sauna. I left there feeling super spoilt! I am convinced that everyone deserves to feel this way.
